Our Doctors

Dr Chris McKnight

BSc MBChB MRCGP FRNZGP PGCertClinEd

I was born in Edinburgh and grew up on the east coast of Scotland.  I moved to Manchester to complete my medical degree, then undertook general practice training in Newcastle where I met Joanne.

I worked as a medical registrar in Hawkes Bay when we first came to New Zealand on sabbatical during my GP training.  Joanne and I soon realised that New Zealand was where we wanted to settle and raise our family so we purchased Ohope Beach Medical Centre in 2014.  I am Dad to three little Kiwi girls who take up most of my spare time.

I am interested in the wide variety that general practice offers but particularly skin cancer detection and treatment, men's health, and teaching the medical students you will often meet at the practice.

I am proud of the growth our practice has achieved and of the high standard of care my team delivers.

Dr Joanne McKnight

MBBS MRCGP FRNZCGP

I am originally from Newcastle upon Tyne, in the North East of England. This is where I studied medicine and gained membership with the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Chris and I moved to New Zealand in 2011. After working locally for a few years we bought the medical centre in Ohope in April 2014.

As a General Practitioner I get most reward from working in a small community, knowing my patients and their families. I have special interests in women's health, care of the elderly and dementia. Part of my job entails providing all the primary care needs for the residents in the local dementia rest home.

We live locally in Ohope with our three young children. I enjoy being a mum, walks on the beach, croissants and coffee.

Dr Alice Armstrong

MBChB FRNZGP

I studied medicine at Otago University. I graduated in 2002 and went on to gain experience in Rotorua and Fremantle Hospitals, working in a range of medical specialities.

I then moved into general practice in Rotorua where I have worked for a number of years before moving to the Eastern Bay of Plenty and joining the Ohope Beach team. As a GP I get immense satisfaction from getting to know patients and their families. I have a particular interest in children and women's health.

I live with my husband, young daughter and son on a dairy farm and I enjoy lots of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, skiing and kitesurfing.

Dr Meg Gustafson

Kia Ora.

I was born in the North-East of England; studied at St. Andrews then Manchester University, – graduating in 1981. I found my Scotsman, Joe, and moved to Edinburgh where I completed my GP training gaining Membership to the Royal College of GP's and then worked as a GP in Edinburgh for several years.

Joe was offered a one year teaching exchange in New Zealand and we both fell in love with this piece of Paradise. We eagerly emigrated with our three little girls in 1994. For twenty years I worked as a GP in Taupo/Turangi. Once all our girls had finished university, Joe and I set off traveling around New Zealand and Australia, Joe started writing while I did the locum work. Now I have finally “grown up” and decided to settle in the Ohope area. We have moved to a lifestyle block and I am rapidly learning, (not necessarily successfully), about  farming !

People and whanau are central to General Practice – that is very important to me. I enjoy all aspects of General Practice, the variety, the challenge and the fact that we are always learning.

He aha te mea nui o tenei Ao?  He Tangata, He Tangata, He Tangata!
